Stories of Students coming to faith

Fraternity Guy comes to faith in Jesus

Meet Kevin Hokanson. Kevin is a SigEp from San Diego State University. Kevin served as the new member educator for one semester and is currently the VP of Facilities Management for his Fraternity. Kevin lives in his Fraternity and Imageis a huge influence to the Brothers in his chapter. 3 months ago, Kevin and I met and wanted to talk Christianity. He said that he isn’t really open to Christian but had one question that no one could really explain to him, “Why do Christian pray/worship?” The answer to this question helped to open Kevin’s mind a little to hearing about God.

3 months later, we invited Kevin to come to Greek InterVarsity and the one day he went, he felt God speak to him through the Samaritan Woman at the well, John 4. I started meeting with Kevin weekly after this going through the Gospel of John and answering any question that would arise. Two weeks ago, we had a Greek IV study on raising Lazarus from the dead which mainly focused on putting our hope in Jesus.

After this study, Kevin asked if we could chat in his room. He asked me, “Why put hope in Jesus? I’ve put my hope in things in the past and they’ve let me down.” This led to explaining Jesus’ everlasting and unfailing hope. We met Monday, April 30th to talk through John 5-10. Kevin asked questions about the unbelief of the Pharisees, the response of the Jews and how they wanted more and more answers yet could not see, and the man born blind–the difference between spiritual and physical brokenness/healing. Kevin then asked to see the 4 Circles Diagram. Afterwards, I asked Kevin what circle he sees himself in. He said that he saw himself in the third circle. This was a perfect opportunity to explain what it actually means to be in the third circle and have a relationship with Jesus.

After running through the 4 Circles, reexplaining the gospel and asking him if he wants to pray to accept Jesus and start a relationship with God he responded by saying that he wants to start his relationship with God right now and prayed the prayer to accept Christ into his life! Please be praying for Kevin as he begins his relationship with Jesus!

Greek Conference (Indianapolis)

Friday Night Talk

Saturday Night Talk

Kristina and I (Beau) had the privilege of speaking at National Greek Conference a few weeks ago. 650 students from 43 campuses showed up! We saw God move powerfully that weekend as hundreds stood to come home to the Father. Ultimately 50 students at the Indianapolis conference marked on their card that they were going to start following Jesus!

We preached three talks, Friday & Saturday night and then again Sunday morning. Every talk we did together and it was really fun! Friday night, we spoke out of John 2, Jesus turning water into wine, and we challenged students to “Be open to God, and he will reveal himself to you this weekend” You can watch Friday’s talk here. Saturday night, we spoke on Luke 15 and the two sons that are distant from the father. One son is distant because of his badness (the younger son) and the older son is distant because of his goodness (working to be moral). Both are missing the fathers heart and both need to come home into relationship. You can watch Saturday’s talk here. Sunday we stayed in Luke 15 and talked about the servants in the passage and how they understood the heart of the Father and celebration. We talked about how we need to be a community back on campus that can communicate the fathers heart to others and celebrate the things and people he celebrates. Most importantly, lost people coming home!

During the day on Saturday, students were in concentrations led by other staff from around the country. Concentrations were for various types of students. Some were for seekers and skeptics, while others were for Christians who are stuck in bad life style choices. There is even a concentration for leaders who want to stand out in their house for Christ and they learn to lead bible studies and ministry right in the fraternity and sorority.
Kristina did all this while being 36 weeks pregnant and she did an awesome Job. We both are surprised she made it, but God really sustained her through this. We had a ton of fun, and more importantly, God used us mightily that weekend as well as all the staff and volunteers who led at the conference. Thank you so much for the prayers!

Video: Student Testimonies of Turning to Jesus at Catalina

check out some testimonies from Soul Food, our fall conference, at Catalina every year in early November.

Karen: Student Testimony of Turning Back to Jesus

Helping students find their way back to God: Karen is like many college students. They grow up with some faith, come to SDSU and get swept up into the party scene, then wake up one day finding themselves far from God. Well, InterVarsity loves helping students find their way back, and by God’s grace we were able to do that this fall for her. Watch the video of her testimony at our last meeting of the year just two weeks ago!

Simon: Student Testimony of Turning to Jesus

Watch a great testimony from Simon, a 3rd year at SDSU, as he shares about Jesus breaking the addictions in his life and reconciling him back to his mother.
